About Board of Trustees meetings

The board holds six two-day meetings throughout the academic year, usually convening on Thursdays and Fridays. The annual organizational meeting takes place every August. Special meetings may be held at the call of the chair of the board.

Meetings cover diverse topics, but regularly address policies, capital improvements, budgets, the conferral of degrees, and faculty tenure and promotion.

May 10, 2021 - Executive Session

The IU Board of Trustees will meet in executive session on Monday, May 10 at 5:30 p.m. This meeting is in accordance with Indiana State Code IC 5-14-1.5-6.1(b)(5).

June 2, 2021 - Tuition Forum

Every other year Indiana University holds a public tuition forum to present proposed tuition and fee information and allow for comments by the public. June 10-11, 2021 - Location To Be Determined

The regular meeting of the Indiana University Board of Trustees will take place on June 10 and 11. Location to be determined.

Attending a meeting

Anyone may attend Board of Trustees meetings. Indiana University is a public institution and, in accordance with state law, all trustee sessions, including committee meetings, committees of the whole, seminars, most retreat sessions, and the formal business meeting, are all open to the public. The only sessions that are not open to the public are executive sessions.

Tickets or reservations are not necessary. Board meetings are well attended, and on occasion attendees may be asked to line up to enter the meeting room. You may be asked to open bags for spot checks.

According to the board bylaws, only members of the board, the chair, and those recognized by the chair may address the board. Please send email to to share your comments and to suggest agenda items for future consideration. Public comment is not taken at board meetings.

Rules for attendees

You may
  • Observe all proceedings
  • Take notes
  • Hold signs that are not affixed to poles, sticks, etc.
  • Hand out leaflets outside the entrances to trustees meetings
You may not
  • Disrupt the meeting with noisemakers, demonstrations, or chanting
  • Block egress (safe access to exits and entrances, hallways, etc.)
  • Exceed room capacity or provisions for safe seating

About executive sessions

An executive session is a meeting that is open only to the members of an organization. Other participants, such as counsel, advisors, or administrators, may attend by invitation.

According to Indiana code (IC 5-14-1.5 Public Meetings (Open Door Law)), a public agency such as the Trustees of Indiana University may hold a closed-door session to discuss a limited number of specific topics, such as personnel issues, litigation, and security.
