The board holds four two-day meetings throughout the academic year, usually convening on Thursdays and Fridays. The annual organizational meeting takes place every August. Special meetings may be held at the call of the chair of the board.
Meetings cover diverse topics, but regularly address policies, capital improvements, budgets, the conferral of degrees, and faculty tenure and promotion.
The next meeting of the Board of Trustees will be held February 20-21, 2025 at Indiana University Indianapolis.

Anyone may attend Board of Trustees meetings. Indiana University is a public institution and, in accordance with state law, all trustee sessions, including committee meetings, committees of the whole, seminars, most retreat sessions, and the formal business meeting, are all open to the public. The only sessions that are not open to the public are executive sessions.
Tickets or reservations are not necessary. Board meetings are well attended, and on occasion attendees may be asked to line up to enter the meeting room. You may be asked to open bags for spot checks.
According to the board bylaws, only members of the board, the chair, and those recognized by the chair may address the board. Please send email to bdot@iu.edu to share your comments and to suggest agenda items for future consideration. Public comment is not taken at board meetings.
An executive session is a meeting that is open only to the members of an organization. Other participants, such as counsel, advisors, or administrators, may attend by invitation.
According to Indiana code (IC 5-14-1.5 Public Meetings (Open Door Law)), a public agency such as the Trustees of Indiana University may hold a closed-door session to discuss a limited number of specific topics, such as personnel issues, litigation, and security.
